Hey Alan, You're exactly right! This is what I would I would suggest for any guitarist in a band setting. The less distortion you use the better the TONE, and the thicker the sound of the band. Right on my friend!

Do as Rob says! I am 49 years old and started playing again after a 20 year break. I copied Rob with the Index, Middle and Pinky style. What a difference. You have to give it time and practice. Thanks Rob

Bullseye, Your adivce on turning back the distortion is a dramatic change for practice. I have turned back the distortion with the band also. I used very little distortion in the first place but, cutting back even more is tremendous. Now while our "weekend garage band" hooks up, i can actually hear my guitar. It sounds fuller, hard to explain.

Hi Dean - I don't recommend sliding within this type of practice. The reason, is you want to work up to a point of being able to stretch your fingers that distance. I agree that it doesn't feel comfortable at first, maybe your fingers can't even do the full stretch yet, but they will in time. Just keep working on stretching them into these positions. Use index finger, middle finger, and pinky for the 3,5,7 frets, and in time it will get easier. Also try positioning the guitar in a way that allows more comfort for you. Hope that helps...
This method has helped many of my guitar students break through the barrier of mastering guitar notes across the fretboard. If this has helped you better understand the fretboard, please share your experience here. Thanks.
